Summer Externship at the International Trade Administration

This summer I also have the great opportunity of working at the International Trade Administration (ITA) in the Office of Health and Consumer Goods (OHCG) down in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C.  My office, the OHCG, is then broken down into two offices, the Health Office and the Consumer Goods office.  I am working in the Health office along with Nate.  Since Nate has already written about our office, I’ll write about the project I am working on.

Like Nate said, the ITA’s mission is to “strengthen the competitiveness of U.S. businesses, promotes trade and investment, and ensures fair trade through the rigorous enforcement of our trade laws and agreements.” (http://trade.gov/about.asp).  With this in mind, I have the privilege of delving into the general issue of government procurement internationally of U.S. pharmaceuticals and medical devices.  More specifically, I will be researching how the funds provided by President Obama’s newly implemented Global Health Initiative (GHI) will affect the procurement of U.S. pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

With my office being surrounded by the capital’s most historical buildings and monuments (the White House, Washington Monument, and the Smithsonian Institution, etc.), there will be so much to explore and see this summer along with my work at the ITA.  With that said, I am very excited to see where this summer will lead.
