Call for Papers

In response to the Pennsylvania Human Relations Committee’s recent finding of probable cause of racial discrimination at a suburban Philadelphia swim club, the Widener Journal of Law, Economics and Race (WJLER) requests the submissions of comments by scholars of any discipline reflecting the racial, economic and legal aspects of this case.  A PDF copy of the findings can be found on our website at www.wjler.org. Comments should be approximately 5-8 pages in length, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, include the author’s name on the first page of the comment, and contain footnotes that conform to proper Bluebook format. Please submit a current resume or curriculum vitae with all contact information.

All work must be submitted to wjler@mail.widener.edu by November 22, 2009.

Valley Club Discrimination Controversy

           The Valley Club of Hunnington Valley is facing a widely debated discrimination suit.  Recently, the Pennsylvania Human Rights Commission issued a Probable Cause Finding for discrimination pertaining to the Valley Club’s denial of service to certain African American children participating in the Creative Steps day care program.  The majority of the children who participate in the Creative Steps Programs are African American.  The Creative Steps day care, had contacted the Valley Club seeking

Dr. William Poole is the former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve bank of St. Louis. Poole was also a member of the Council of Economic Advisers and a member of the Academic Advisory Panels of the Federal Reserve Banks of New York and Boston. He will be discussing the current politics of the federal reserve and the various stages involved in improving our banking system’s stability on Thursday, October 8th, at 5:00 in Ruby Vale Court Room.

Marie Hardin, Ph.D., associate professor and associate director at the Penn State John Curley Center for Sports discusses the case of Oscar Pistorius, a South African sprinter and double-amputee, and the IAAF’s declaration that Mr. Pistorius’ flex-step prosthetics gave him an unfair advantage in races. The IAAF announcement came shortly before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
