H1N1 Flu Update September 1, 2009

The CDC has indicated that universities should expect wider transmission of the H1N1 flu during the 2009-2010 academic year. Their recommendations include the following:

Individuals experiencing flu like symptoms should not attend classes until 24 hours after their fever resolves, and should isolate themselves from contact with others for this period.
If possible, on campus residents should go home for care during their illness.
Residents who are unable to return home should establish a “flu buddy scheme” by pairing up with another student to provide care if one becomes ill.
At risk individuals (those with underlying health conditions such as asthma or diabetes) should seek medical attention promptly if they have flu symptoms.
Individuals are urged to receive vaccination for the seasonal flu.

H1N1 flu update May 7, 2009

The CDC is no longer recommending the cancellation of classes or public events in schools with cases of H1N1 flu. Neither campus of the School of Law has any confirmed or probable cases of the flu at this time. Exams are proceeding normally.

As of last night, there were 38 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in Delaware. In Delaware, all reported cases have been mild, and individuals are recovering after having received treatment. The Division of Public Health in Delaware has a hotline for questions that is currently operating M-F 9-5:30. Call 1-866-408-1899.

In Pennsylvania, there have been 2 confirmed cases and 18 probable cases of the H1N1 flu in counties around the state. Cases reported have been mild.

Update on H1N1 Flu for May 5, 2009

The number of cases of H1N1 flu continues to rise in the United States and around the world. There are 380 confirmed cases in 36 states in the US. Delaware is now reporting 20 confirmed cases and 6 probable cases. Pennsylvania is reporting 1 confirmed case and 7 probable cases in counties around the state.

The presentation of the flu in this country appears to be mild, but the CDC continues to work to contain the spread of the H1N1 flu.
Handwashing, social distancing covering a cough are still the recommended ways to avoid the flu. Individuals with symptoms are advised to seek advice from their health care provider.

Information About H1N1 (Swine) Flu: Dean Ammons Update 1

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I am writing to let you know that Widener University is closely monitoring the developments that have occurred globally in the past several days regarding the swine flu.

No one from the University community has reported any related symptoms. I would encourage everyone to monitor his or her own personal health and seek medical evaluation should you have a fever.

Generally, the incubation period of the swine flu is 3-4 days. If a person contracts the illness, symptoms would likely occur within that time frame. Traditional illness prevention methods – such as frequently washing your hands or using hand sanitizer lotions, along with covering coughs and sneezes with your arm or sleeve – remain important to reduce any potential spread of all such respiratory illnesses.

For a number of years, the University has been preparing for the potential of a global pandemic flu outbreak. In 2007, a University-wide task force was created and developed a University pandemic prevention and response plan. The task force meets regularly to assess the plan and works closely with local, state and federal officials.

More information about swine flu is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at http://www.cdc.gov. The Delaware Division of Public Health has information on its website: www.delaware.gov. Pennsylvania information can be assessed at www.health.state.pa.us.

Information About H1N1 (Swine) Flu; how you can stay healthy

The University of Delaware has identified four students with cases of influenza that meet probable definitions of swine flu. Based on advice from the Delaware Department of Public Health, classes are continuing there. NO cases of suspected flu have been reported at Widener University School of Law. Individuals experiencing flu symptoms (CDC : http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/) should contact their physicians.
