H1N1 Flu Update September 1, 2009

The CDC has indicated that universities should expect wider transmission of the H1N1 flu during the 2009-2010 academic year.  Their recommendations include the following:

  1. Individuals experiencing flu like symptoms should not attend classes until 24 hours after their fever resolves, and should isolate themselves from contact with others for this period.
  2. If possible, on campus residents should go home for care during their illness.
  3. Residents who are unable to return home should establish a “flu buddy scheme” by pairing up with another student to provide care if one becomes ill.
  4. At risk individuals (those with underlying health conditions such as asthma or diabetes) should seek medical attention promptly if they have flu symptoms.
  5. Individuals are urged to receive vaccination for the seasonal flu.
