Be able to sell “your story”. You know your resume inside and out, and you’ve memorized the employer’s profile. That’s a great start but in today’s economy, more is required. You must be clear about why you have applied for a position and how your experience meets the employer’s needs. Talk about specific examples from your resume that demonstrate your ability to succeed. Convey how the position dovetails with your career goals. Show commitment, passion and/or enthusiasm. In essence, be ready to tell a compelling story about why you are the right person for the job!
Don’t take delay or rejection personally. Job searches in the new millennium take more time and are more likely to expose you to some degree of rejection. In many instances, the delay or rejection you experience may be a function of timing or the organization’s internal processes. Whatever the reason, it is important not to take the “no” or “not yet” response too personal. Stay positive and enthusiastic. If, in the end, you do not receive an offer, be gracious and appreciative of the consideration granted to you. You may never learn the full story about why you were not selected, but glean what you can from the employer. Armed with this information, take a step back, evaluate your own performance objectively, and make the necessary adjustments. Once you are satisfied that you have completed these tasks, you can feel good about MOVING ON!
Recognize the importance of building community: You’ve heard the expression, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Well, when it comes to building a legal career, the same principle applies. Often you have to rely on the collective wisdom, advice and contacts of others. This is not a bad thing. Especially when you are just starting out, gathering a community of support comprised of family, friends and professional contacts will provide the necessary fuel for a job search filled with twists and turns. In addition to providing emotional support, your personal network can spark ideas and leads and be a valuable source for recommendations.
