Are you going to Venice this summer? If so, you might want to check out the summer medieval carnival, the Market of the Gaite 2009 , in Bevagna, a region in Umbria (the official Italian site of the event). This event happens from June 19th through the 28th and it draws over 100,000 people to the tiny town every summer. On display: craftspersons demonstrating how paints, candles, paper, pharmaceutical herbs, and silk are made, as well as a demonstration of how fabrics are dyed; all this is done using the technologies of centuries ago.
There are also contests among the guilds during the festival. During our 2009 Spring Break, I joined Debb McCreery and Tony Doyle, for a first-hand tour of how some of these ancient crafts were produced.
In the photos: Serena, an Italian law student and our tour guide; showing us how paint is made; the streets of Bevagna.
On behalf of the faculty, staff and administration of the Widener University School of Law, I am writing to congratulate you as you approach the culmination of your legal education, our 2009 Commencement ceremonies. Find all the information on our Commencement Information site.
Commencement marks the completion of your legal studies, and accordingly, it is one of the most significant events on our academic calendar. At Commencement, we celebrate your achievements and all the hard work that helped you reach this stage of your career. We also recognize the faculty’s role in preparing you for the future, and express appreciation to all of those who helped you succeed, especially your families.
I am looking forward to participating with you in the Commencement ceremony and the events which surround it, and hope that your family and friends will join us to make your graduation a memorable occasion.
Sincerely,
The Geneva Study Abroad program runs in two segments: June 1- June 12 and June 12- June 26 (contact Arlene Trapuzzano artrapuzzano@widener.edu for information). While in Switzerland, be sure to join us for the June 5th one day trip to Geneva that will include a visit to the World Health Organization. The video below shows our trip through Switzerland including the famous water spout, Jet d’Eau on Lake Geneva.
Professor Tania Groppi from the University of Sienna spent a few days on the Delaware campus visiting with us at my invitation. I met Professor Groppi while in Tuscany a few weeks ago. She is a scholar in comparative constitutional law. She attended Professor David Hodas’ constitutional law class and talked with faculty at a luncheon on issues of comparative constitutional law.
Here is her message (she is seen here standing with Associate Dean and Professor Erin Daly)
“The faculty of Law at Widener is organizing some wonderful courses this summer in Tuscany – in Volterra and in Siena. We hope that this is a truly fruitful cooperative project; it will certainly be very interesting with many diverse experiences for both Italian and American students. It’s really very exciting for us.”
This year alumni and friends have been invited to join me in Volterra, Italy which includes lectures by Delaware Supreme Court Justice Randy Holland. A few weeks ago, I along with Debb Mccreery (Assistant Vice President for Law School Development and Alumni Relations ) and Tony Doyle (Assistant Dean, Educational Services, Graduate and International Programs), visited Rome, Tuscany, and Umbria. The video you see here is just a short compilation of sights and sounds from tuscany. for the longer version of our visit please see the photo collage video ( link here).
Next year i hope that you will be able to join us as one of our newest alumni.
